Angelina Jolie, Changeling - Eastwood formula works well here, and HFFA likes her, her previous three Golden globes...
3. Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road - Maybe lead for The Reader? Or She won at supporting?
4. Sophie Okonedo, Skin - Maybe next year, but according to imbd the release date is October
5. Cate Blanchett; The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - She didn't get an Oscar Nomination this time, but HFFA loves her.
If we have 6: Melissa Leo, Frozen River - She deserves it
Alternative 1: Kristin Scott Thomas, I've Loved you So Long - I would love this...
Alternative 2: Julianne Moore, Blidness - If the good response in Toronto means something...
Surprise: Keira Knigthley, The Duchess - I hope not, please...

Comedy or Musical Actress:
1. Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married - HFFA loves young beautiful actresses in complex roles...
2. Sally Hawkins, Happy-Go-Lucky: Right now, Hathaway's biggest competition.
3. Meryl Streep, Mamma Mia!: Maybe she didn't win here but her nomination could help her, a la Mirren.
4. Frances McDormand, Burn After Reading: I know, the film is a mess and she's supporting, but she's hilarious...
5. Sarah Jessica Parker, Sex & the City: The Movie: HFFA love the TV Serie but maybe is her prize her nomination.
If we have 6: Amanda Seyreid, Mamma Mia! - It's possible the two in a row
Alternative 1: Penelope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona - Supporting performers could get a lead nomination here...
Alternative 2: Rachel mcAdams, The Lucky Ones/The time traveler's Wife - Depends the campaign and Competition
Surprise: Chiara Mastroianni, Love Songs - IMpossible, but is with Louis Garrel my wishful thinkingAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21228255.post-20303185880126409652008-09-05T06:03:00.000-04:002008-09-05T06:03:00.000-04:00I would kill to see Kristin Scott-Thomas nominated...I would kill to see Kristin Scott-Thomas nominated for C'est longtemps que je t'aime, as it is easily career best work, and it made me go back and look up whether she was really 100% English to boot. Most importantly: it was stunning character work.

As far as the comments by anonymous are concerned, I think he or she just completely misses the point here of what is rewarded. Although its not always about quality, certainly it has often been more about celebrity in the past ("academy award winner John Wayne"?), oscars are a reward for great performances, not actors who string together big scenes.

His comments about Hathaway are like saying Denzel Washington won an oscar for playing a Sam Jackson character in Training Day, which many have said, actually, but it doesn't take away from the fact that it was a great performance (though not by a long shot his best).

For the record: Hathaway has gotten consistently good reviews as a comedy actress with star potential, and has been trying to branch out into drama. Being the only actress not nominaated for BBM doesn't mean people didn't remember that performance, and yes, Becoming Jane was shaky, but from a lead character in a Jonathan Demme I expect nothing less than a complex and challenging role, and I'm not the only one.

Also, for the record: Melissa Leo is not "an unknown", and Ellen Page doesn't play quirky roles all the time without getting nominated: She's 21! She got her first oscar buzz for a very dark movie at age 18, and her first actual nod for a - granted - a somewhat quirky role at age 20.idiosyncraticnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21228255.post-84769339595626116852008-09-04T22:11:00.000-04:002008-09-04T22:11:00.000-04:00This time last year everyone and their Momma was p...This time last year everyone and their Momma was predicting Keira for Atonement based on the buzz...see how that turned out.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21228255.post-4190638122017265642008-09-04T18:37:00.000-04:002008-09-04T18:37:00.000-04:00Oh, I was speaking about The Edge of Love. But I just looked, and The Edge of Love doesn't have a release date. So I will drop Knightley for Linney. I'm thinking that Hathaway will walk away with the GG and she is very lucky there isn't that much competition in the Comedy GG race this year. Last year Page and Cotillard were dominating the race. This year, I can't think of other nominees. I'm thinking that Sarah Jessica Parker will get in for Sex and the City. Sally Hawkins, as well. The two leads in Mamma Mia! are very likely.17 Year Old Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06587665362502209914noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21228255.post-10110026601142179002008-09-04T17:42:00.000-04:002008-09-04T17:42:00.000-04:00I respect your opinion 17, But I think Leo could g...I respect your opinion 17, But I think Leo could get that spot, because she could the critics darling of this year and the film received good reviews and maybe is a clasic performance for recomendation, a la Amy Adams (especially her, with a movie who didn't do in anything and most of her buzz was for the people and Internet) or Keisha Castle-Hughes.

And also I think Keira Knightley is out of race, right now she received mixed reviews. Good in UK but negatives in USA (Times, Variety, Emmanuel Levy, new York post...) and many of the critics said she's good but not Oscar Worthy and Ralph Fiennes overshadowed her. Even in a review (I don't remember wich one): "Keira looks like a foolish, hysterical, fallen woman".Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21228255.post-73089723471613156422008-09-04T17:22:00.000-04:002008-09-04T17:22:00.000-04:00Marissa Leo's buzz has dipped very, very low. I would say 6-10 are (in no order) Nicole Kidman, Sophie Okonedo, Krisin Scott Thomas, Julianne Moore, and Keira Knightley. I'm not including movies that don't have a release dates, so Portman, Blunt and Barrymoore arnt predicted.17 Year Old Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06587665362502209914noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21228255.post-9250752138361700472008-09-04T15:58:00.000-04:002008-09-04T15:58:00.000-04:00I think Anne Hathaway is very talented, pretty and...I think Anne Hathaway is very talented, pretty and classic, not like Keira Knightley (Overrated in my opinion, beside I respect her nomination in Pride & Prejudice). I believe her performance in "becoming Jane" is a little bit underrated. Not for Oscar Nomination but unleast for Golden Globe Nomination for Drama Actress instead Keira Knightley (The worst part in Atonement) or Jodie Foster.

My predictions for best Actress:
1. Anne Hathaway, Rachel getting Married
2. Anjelina Jolie, Changeling
3. Melissa Leo, Frozen River
4. Meryl Streep, Doubt
5. The big question? I do think she's one of the most talented young actresses out there, and I am rooting for her. Can't wait to see it.

Anonymous, I think that kind of thinking only serves to limit actors in what kind of roles they play. Why should Anne Hathaway not embrace these kinds of roles as she grows an an actress? I could also make the argument that if Hathaway was only good in the phone scene, Williams was only good in the "Jack Nasty" scene. But, that will probably open up a huge can of worms.Liznoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21228255.post-71781775305412311612008-09-03T21:14:00.000-04:002008-09-03T21:14:00.000-04:00I found an anonymous!! Williams was very good, and her nomination was well deserved. I just think that its unfortunate that Hathaway wasn't praised as much as Williams.

Ellen Page and Christina Ricci don't play "dark quirky." They play "Crazy and dark." I'm guessing you are talking about Ellen Page in Hard Candy, right? That wasn't "dark quirky." That was a crazy womam who cut off a mans penis, and it turned off many. I thought it was a great movie and an awesome performance. When Page did play "quirky" she was rewarded for Juno.

I should have explained myself more clearly. I was predicting Hathaway last February when I had to pick for Nathaniel's blog. Hathaway is an actress that many wanted to see get a nomination. Rachel Getting Married is getting fantastic reviews not only for Hathaway, but for the screenplay, the director, its two supporting actresses, and for the movie.17 Year Old Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06587665362502209914noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21228255.post-43438748066547938692008-09-03T17:23:00.000-04:002008-09-03T17:23:00.000-04:00I'm going to this not this Monday but the next.
