Im so excited for this movie. Id love to see Nicole Kidman in a great movie musical. Im hoping for the next Chicago out of Rob Marshall and not the next Dreamgirls... or worse the next Memoirs of a Geisha.

i've never seen the musical but i've seen 8 1/2. seriously, the idea of a musical based on that movie both makes no sense and a lot of sense at the same time.

ok, the road trailer is the most misleading thing ever.

Seriously, that trailer for "The Road" is absolutely hideous. I think there's more dialogue in the trailer than there was in the entire book. Plus, what's with all that news footage bullshit at the beginning?
If they turn this into "The Day After Tomorrow Part 2," I will so pissed.

Kidman is rarely ever the weakest link. Sans Bewitched and Stepford Wives, I don't think she's ever had a horrible/weak performance---and I've seen the majority of her films.
She's just flat and lifeless and the same in all her films, 18yo. Take it from a 33yo.
She doesn't have to be 'horrible' to be the weak link. Overrated and uninteresting is enough.
There is a reason why she doesn't stand out in the Nine clip, while every other actress does. Not to mention a reason why all her films bomb.
Age doesn't really belong in this debate. I disagree with so many of your remarks, so let me just start.
Kidman has never taken on roles solely to get an Oscar, to be taken seriously as an actress or to become a big box office star. She became recognized as an actress with To Die For, Moulin Rouge and The Others. All three of these films were risks, and their success could not have been predicted. And all three films are conceived by directors of vision, especially Moulin Rouge and The Others.
She didn't make Dogville and Birth for universal appeal but to extend and challenge herself as an artist. I don't understand how an actress, who in the last 10 years, has made films like Eyes Wide Shut, Moulin Rouge!, The Others, The Hours, Dogville, Birth, The Human Stain, Margot at the Wedding, The Golden Compass and Australia can be called overrated. All those characters she has played in those films have been interesting and compelling. She has proved herself in these films that she is the best actress of her generation.
Sure, maybe Hollywood wanted to turn her into something, but she's resisted. People act as if she's constantly trying to get back "on top" but it's clear that she isn't seeking universal approval. Even in "popcorn flicks" she has played characters that are difficult to love, and she's said that projects like Bewitched are just opportunities for her to take a break from her taxing career.
But also, her movies do not "BOMB" as much as people want them too. Many make back their budgets and become succesful for the studios once they come out on DVD. People just want to blame solely Kidman for the failures but it's not her fault.
I will be the first person to say that her career is all over the place (I mean, from Dogville to Bewitched??) but no one but her understands how an actor will be remembered. Yet I have a feeling it will involve the word legend.

She's 'married' TC for personal gain, has deliberately appeared in 'artsy' films AND trashy films (Batman Returns or whatever) to get a foot in the door. Once she was supposedly on top, her so-called acting chops weren't enough to sustain a 'real' career a la Cate Blanchett.
She is not considered the greatest actress of her generation. Cate Blanchett is everything NK is not.
Again: there is a reason people don't watch her films, and don't nominate her anymore (hello? Hillary Swank has twice the number of Oscars, while Cate and Kate are nominated every other year).
Can I just say that she and TC were finally revealed for the phonies they are?

Fascinating & formidable actors!
I have to say, whenever someone criticizes an actor by starting off on their personal life, as Judy did, I can't take them seriously. What does it matter why she was married to Tom Cruise? How does that affect her work in the slightest? And so what if she's appeared in a few flops (as ALL of the actresses you mentioned have)? I've never seen one of her movies in which she wasn't one of the best things about it.
I'm with 18. I love her and it's sad that the backlash against her has gotten so strong. After working with the number of great directors she has (Lars von Trier, Stanley Kubrick, Jane Campion, Baz Luhrmann, Gus Van Sant, Noah Baumbach, Sydney Pollack, Anthony Minghella, and so on), you'd like she'd get a little more respect. I can't wait to see her in "Rabbit Hole." It will be such a great role for her.
It matters because her private life is precisely why she's been shoved down our throats, film-wise.
Her marriage to TC is the reason why she ever got a break in Hollywood (yes, I know she was in Australian films before - but so were others, who never got a chance in the US).
Her personal life is a fair category for criticism.

it wasn't until she and tom cruise divorced did her career becomg huge. the fact of the matter is, she is a good actress who tries to challenge herself. as an actor, i would definitely want a career like the one she has.
if anything, the only issue with her acting now is that she appears to have had so much botox that it seems to be getting in the way of her expressing emotions properly on film. HOWEVER, she looks absolutely fierce in nine and i have a good feeling that thisis going to get her some well deserved positive attention.
But Judy, as mrbrightside says, why did her career blow up only after she and Cruise divorced? I'd say she works now more than she ever did when they were married. If he was the only reason why she was successful, why hasn't she dropped off the map by now? Sorry, that reasoning makes no sense.

I could say the same thing about Penelope Cruz. She only dated Tom Cruise for recognition in the United States.
You keep on blasting Kidmans personal life but have yet to say why she's "s just flat and lifeless and the same in all her films".
I don't even know how you can say she's the same in all her films but go for it. I'd love to hear it.
I'll back up the Kidman favoring crowd, 18 first and foremost. I thinkk several factors are being confused here.
First, Kidman is noted for being box office poison (a recent survey comparing asking price per film to actual domestic gross found her to be the worst "investment" in Hollywood, whereas Matt Damon was the best. This did not take into account that many of her films do much better in other territories, Europe especially). This does not reflect on the artistic quality of her films.
Second, she often gets very good reviews for films that are not liked very much. I remember many critics panning the likes of Dogville and Birth, but praising her performance nonetheless (Cate Blanchet had a similar period with films like the Gift, the Shipping News, Charlotte Gray, the Missing, Veronice Guerin after her Elizabeth-breakthrough, by the way)
Also, while her personal life does not affect her acting qualities, they do VERY much change expectations. Her high profile as an actress means every performance and every film comes under the radar. Someone like Samantha Morton or Melissa Leo or Emily Watson can make 10 crappy films in a row and still be considered a brilliant actress, simply because nobody even notices those films exist, while the few performances they give in films that reach a wide(r) audience resonate and define their image as brilliant character actors.
Finally, I believe Kidman takes challenging roles. Obviously, her agent will compell her to take the occasional blockbuster to keep her profile (and price tag) up, but Kidman doesn't shy away from extremely unsympathetic or weak and fragile characters. I personally find her performance in the Hours a bit too hysterical and often very mannered (as Katherine Hepburn once said of Meryl Streep: "you can see her brain going tick-tick-tick"), but her role in Birth is nothing short of an acting triumph.
If I were Kidman's agent, I'd have advised her to take biopics, true stories, big epics, acclaimed novel adaptations, and lots of romantic comedies. To play the ditzy reporter, the brave mom, the ambitious female politician who serves as an example, the lawyer with a heart of gold, or the one-legged mentally handicapped deaf mute blind musical genius with an abusive husband who is also a nazi, cuz its world war 2. And its directed by Ron Howard.
PS: that thing anout people complaining shes icey or she uses too much botox. That comes from single women with wrinkles. I dare anyone to look at that closeup from Birth and tell me shes not a brilliant actress with an extremely expressive face (in the subtlest way possible)
idiosyncratic: it comes from pretty much anyone these days. If men didn't care about the Botox, they would go and see her films. They don't.
When people think of NK, they think of Botox - and not of The Hours. Her face has been ridiculed so many times now, it just stuck.
Audiences don't connect with her films. No amount of fanboy fantasy is going to change that fact.

How and why is she flat & lifeless? Well, she's just a very mechanical and icy performer. Her roles may be wildly different, 18yo, yet her acting style is not. I realise, this may be subjective, but *again*: people don't watch her films. There does seem to be a consensus out there.
It's funny that with hindsight, Meryl Streep gave the most memorable performance in The Hours. She who so often is criticised for click-click-click acting is really a model of spontaneity next to NK.
As for Penelope Cruz: yes, she dated TC for personal gain, but she was never considered 'the next everything'. Unlike NK she was never handed a career, but worked herself up to where she is today.
It's silly to say NK's marriage had nothing to do with her career post-TC. Of course she got roles to build a CV in exchange for bearding for TC. If you think that marriage was anything but calculated you're just naive.

My theory: Having impressed Hollywood in an acclaimed Australian movie ("Dead Calm"), Nicole Kidman was offered scripts in Hollywood, where she continues to impress today.
Your theory: Having appeared an in an acclaimed Australian movie, Hollywood took pity on her for knowing that she was going to fall into the clutches of the evil Tom Cruise, and invited her to come to Hollywood. Unfortunately, they were not able to stop her unholy union with the man, and the entire community also managed to overlook the fact that she's not talented. During their marriage, she is offered some good scripts, some bad ones, but she is terrible in all movies. Once she and TC are divorced, despite never having given a good performance, Hollywood again takes pity on her by throwing her great scripts, because everyone knows that the studios care much more about the feelings of one actress than about their own ability to make money and win awards. So, even though Nicole Kidman still delivers terrible performance after terrible performance, she is still near the top of every casting director's list because they all feel so bad for her and can't bring themselves to tell her that she really sucks.

Almodovar writes his roles for Cruz because she is the most famous actress from Spain--basically what Baz does with Nicole since the most famous Australian actress.

They do actually. Regardless of your opinion, many people like Baz. Nicole opted out of Von Trier's followup due to a scheduling conflict, but he had wanted her. She was in Stephen Daldry's next film, but dropped out due to pregnancy. She has worked with several high profile directors who passed shortly after working with her (Kubrick, Minghella, Pollack), and therefore didnt get a chance to reunite with her, and several others (Shainberg, Baumbach, Glazer) have not actually made any films yet since their Kidman-projects.
Not that any of that matters, really. Some actresses can be brilliant without ever working with the same director twice. And I don't think anyone here would claim her to be the greatest actress of her generation.
The point is you're being very rude, Judy D, to people who disagree with you on Kidman's talent. You cherrypick arguments that you feel you can counter, take a condescending tone (telling 18 y.o.
