I'm gonna start doing my Oscar research tonight, and I was curious to find out two things: 1.) The films and/or performances you think will inevitably get nominated, and 2.) The films and/or performances you think I should avoid.
So far I think the only "inevitable" is Morgan Freeman in the Nelson Mandela biopic. I mean, Freeman + Eastwood + Mandella = a huge Oscar combination.

Not sure about the movies to avoid, however. Some are saying 'Nine' but ... I just don't know. I still think it might be good.
Discuss away!

Nine is just going to get the old Atonement/Dreamgirls style beating. It'll be the filler nomination once all the legitimately brilliant and surprisingly so films show up, Nine will get pushed back. I guarantee you it gets a nomination for Daniel Day-Lewis, and as much as I'd like to predict Kidman she hasn't been popular with the Academy as of late.
Viggo is a sure bet, Depp is a sure bet, Marty's a sure bet. I'm putting my money on Hillcoat for lone director. Michelle Williams is a sure bet for Supp. Actress. The kid in The Road is a good bet.
The more I think about it, though, the more likely it seems that Spike Jonze gets lone director. Hurm. There was no lone director last year, though, so maybe we'll get a 5-5 matchup, although I always have fun predicting the lone director.
Andy, I suggest you these options:
Sure bet (Even Likely):
1. Marion Cotillard: Even when Public Enemies received mixed critics, marion is acclaimed. And with Nine next... She's a great option to return to the Kodak Theater.
2. Michelle Williams: The only thing she would stopped her Oscar Nomination would be lack of time. She's a sure bet.
3. Viggo Mortensen/Koby Smit-McPhee: The Road is too dark, but the performance, according to test screeners, are great and have greta chemisty like father and son.
4. A black actress: Maybe this year, we have finally a black Lead Actress nominated. But Who?: Halle Berry? Sophie Okonedo? Lila Kedabla? Or Gaby Sidibe?
5. Helen Mirren: "The Tempest" is more Oscarish.
6. Daniel Day-Lewis: Like gooddam B.R. Said...
Iffy:
1. Ewan McGregor: Maybe is more my wish, but he's three films and he deserves the Oscar Nomination.
2. Johnny Depp: He's good in Public Enemies (response to Test Screeners), but he's "The Rum Diaries" next year?
3. Carey Mulligan: I hope she won't suffer the Krstin Scott Thomas's bad luck.
i hate to say it but 5 years have gone by, it seems to be time for hilary swank to get nominated again hahaha.
i think there are a lot of exciting movies coming out this year but i feel like we all felt this way last year too...
but i have a good feeling about nine...considering how much talent (and oscar friendly talent) there is, i think it would have to be pretty bad to be completely ignored.
For the record, I had very little I was excited about last year, especially compared to 2007 which had tons of stuff I was excited for.
Avoid Public Enemies! Also Matt Damon!
Nine will be a big hit and win Best Picture next year!
Kez sais
I can't wait to see State of Play - I just read some reviews and they are amazingly good especially about Russell Crowe.
Also Shutter Island - maybe Leo's turn for an Oscar.
Avoid Brothers, it is garbage.

Well, considering Mo'nique is already getting mad hot oscar buzz, I think this could turn out to be a very interesting year (imagine if best supporting actress comes down to Mo'nique vs. Fergie?)
I think Meryl Streep shouldn't be nominated.
I think Alberto Iglesias, the music composer for 'Broken embraces', should receive the nomination. The music in Almodóvar's movie is AMAZING.
wasn't long ago they'd nominate Judi Dench if she'd read the phone book aloud. Let's see if she can make an impression in Nine for supporing.
Kidman might be good for a comeback, but yes, she has been long gone.
If "the Special Relationship" nabs a (limited) theatrical run - it wouldn't be a first for a made-for-tv-movie - I'd LOOOOVE to see Julianne Moore get recognition for best supporting actress for playing Hillary Clinton (I'd be willing to pernonally threat violence against any academy member who wouldn't vote for her).
Matt Damon is overdue for another nomination and this should be his year.
And how far back did they push that film about Orson Welles starring Zac Efron? I'd still predict the guy who plays Welles if it's close enough to the end of the year.
Oh, and Kristin Scott Thomas for the Seagull, I guess. That's all I got for now.
I Just wanted to share that after watching the movie "Kentucky" that I have now seen every Academy Award Winning performance for Best Supporting Actor....my top 5
1. Denzel Washington - Glory
2. Robert De Niro - Godfather Part II
3. Joe Pesci - Goodfellas
4. Walter Brennan - The Westerner
5. Heath Ledger - The Dark Knight
runner ups are Benicio Del Toro for Traffic; James Dunn for A Tree Grows in Brooklyn; Jason Robards for All the Presidents Men and finally Kevin Kline for A Fish Called Wanda
Public Enemies wont be nominated for anything I am sure of it.
Behold, Sam Rockwell's ticket to a Best Actor nomination.

That would make me happy beyond words.
It looks like Rockwell will give a great performance in 'Moon', but since the Academy treats sci-fi like shit, a nomination is unlikely.
ANDY, have u seen the 5 trailers for the latest harry potter film?
i know its a longshot for an oscar nom beyond special effects and music but does anybody besides me think its gonna be something oscar-worthy??
its dark, emotional and has excellent production value.
wat do u think???
