Back in the saddle again

It's April 1st and I haven't even begun to think about the 2009 Oscar race yet, so I figured now might be a good time to get cracking on my official Oscar predictions.

They won't be up until midway through the month -- I need time to research, which will begin this weekend -- but at the very least, we should be off to a much quicker start than last year.

So stay tuned! And feel free to post your early tips ... right now. :)

A Serious Man could be the fifth. I would love to see that.

I would positively shit myself if that were the lineup. I would go into a diabetic coma if the lineup was:

A Serious Man
Where the Wild Things Are
Shutter Island
Inglorious Basterds
Lovely Bones

Quentin Tarantino needs another Best Director nomination. The man is stark-raving genius. He shattered the mold and ushered in an era of independent filmmaking.

As for the sleeper hit of the year, Adam is a possibility. 500 Days of Summer has pretty much got the whole "indie sleeper" title won already, though. Up in the Air (only because of Jason Reitman, though) and Kick-Ass.

I don't know if Kick-Ass qualifies as an indie, though. I'm not sure of the budget, and it has Nicolas Cage in a supporting role (but Slumdog was directed by Danny motherfucking Boyle), but it looks fairly low-key. Having read the first volume, I would say it could be made on about $15-20 million especially if they have a director who's good at stretching that sort of money.

Nine is probably a sure-fire best picture nominee, although seeing as it's the early front-runner it could have a bad case of Dreamgirls syndrome.

This is my favorite time in Oscar prognosticating, though. I get to pick all my most anticipated films and favorite filmmakers and actors and no one will think I'm crazy.

If The Road is a contender this year, I still say John Hillcoat for the lone director spot, just like I was saying this time last year. And if it is a contender, I think Viggo is the frontrunner for Best Actor, seeing as how Daniel Day-Lewis won just a year ago, not that I would have any problem with him getting a third Oscar.

And maybe they'll nominate Sacha Baron Cohen for Bruno since they screwed that up last time.

I would say that Johnny Depp is the frontrunner. He's playing a real person, his film is gonna make some money, and he has three previous nominations. Only thing that might hurt him is that it's a July release (But that hasn't stopped Cotillard, Ledger, and Cruz)

i seriously don't know if i can make any predictions this early...remember 2 years ago when reservation road had all the hype?

i try to only think about predictions around tiff time...that's where we heard about movies like slumdog and juno...

My picks for awards are
-Julia & Julia (Actress, Supp., Film?)
-Public Enemies(picture, acting, etc.)
-State of Play (acting)
-Shutter Island (acting, directing, picture)
-9 (picture, directing, acting)
-The Informant (acting)
-Where the Wild Things Are (Picture?)
-Lovely Bones (Direction)

there are probably others, but can't think of them right now...

has anyone seen the redband bruno trailer yet? SO funny.

i [heart] sasha baron cohen.

The Goddamn Burn/Reading said...

My friends have been yelling at me to stop quoting Bruno. I've been watching his portions of Da Ali G Show for days now and I was reading Slashfilm when they posted the redband and I screamed like a little girl. Sacha Baron Cohen is a no-holds barred genius, and anyone who gets offended by his work misses the point. I really hope gay rights activists don't protest this film, because the whole point of the Bruno character was to satire homophobia and stereotypical notions of homosexuals.

Don't forget Bruno's NC-17 rating. Granted, Borat received the same rating and ended up with an R but depending on how Bruno is received, I think Cohen had a better shot with Borat. People just may be getting tired of the whole spiel and older Academy members may be even more offended by Bruno if early reports are accurate. As of now, I think it's between Depp and Mortensen for the win and Cohen's a long shot for a nomination.

well being gay, i actually applaud sasha baron cohen for what he's doing.
the camping scene where he talks about sex and the city?! fucking brilliant.
but then again, any gay rights activist who has a problem with it is just as ridiculous and clueless as anyone who didn't understand the point of borat...
(btw, the full title of the film makes me even more excited for this movie...)

The Goddamn Burn/Reading said...

I WISH that were the full title. Apparently it was a joke that someone made and it picked up traction.

And I finally saw Rachel Getting Married. Holy shit.

Burn I wish I could get on AIM and talk to you about RGM. Watch it again. Its fantastic.

Andy Scott said...

Cheri? Really? Doesn't that come out soon? The trailer made it look so ... stale.

Oh man. I'm going to have to predict Swank, aren't I?

18 Year Old Blogger said...

I actually regret predicting Swank. I would know probably change it for Ronan or take a NGNG with Shohreh Aghdasloo.

Thinking about getting a car insurance quote?
Car Insurance
A growing number of people are dropping their auto insurance to try to save money, according to a recent study by the Insurance Research Council (IRC). If the current rate of unemployment continues, the IRC estimates that the national uninsured rate will climb from 13.8 percent in 2007 to 16.3 percent in 2010. With that many people driving without coverage, it's dangerous to be uninsured. But how much car insurance do you really need?
If you're like many people feeling the pinch, your inclination is to get the bare minimum of insurance coverage required by the law in your state. That's a good place to start, though those minimums may not fully protect you -- or your assets -- if you file a claim. We recommend getting more than the minimum coverage unless you are driving a beater and have no assets to protect.
