Ten Most Anticipated Performances of 2008

OK. So there are more than 10 performances listed, but how could I resist with so many big stars in big projects?

Viola Davis, Doubt

We know Meryl's going to hit this one out of the park, but what about the supporting players like Viola Davis? Her role won Adriane Lenox a Tony for a powerful face off with Cherry Jones. Could it win Davis an Oscar?

Leonardo DiCaprio & Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road

They took us to the stars aboard the ill-fated Titanic a little over 10 years ago, but how will they work as a married couple in 1950's Connecticut?

Daniel Craig, Defiance

Because he should have 2 Oscar nominations by now (2003, The Mother and 2006, Casino Royale), and if it takes an Edward Zwick movie for it to finally happen, so be it.

Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon

He hit Oscar's radar twice recently, once in 2005 with "Good Night, and Good Luck" and then once again last year with "Starting Out in the Evening." He should have better luck this year playing Richard Nixon. If the Tonys were any indication, the performance will be too big to ignore.

The "Sex and the City" Ladies (OK. And Jennifer Hudson, too)

I grew to hate "Sex and the City" by the end of its run, but maybe Michael Patrick King will use this to correct every wrong from the series finale. Plus: even if the forced chemistry and overacting lingers, it'll be fun to see them strut through Manhattan in Patricia Field's wardrobe again.

Keira Knightely, "The Duchess"

Who knows if this'll be any good? Yet, after "Atonement," I'm forever at the feet of Keira Knightley.

Nicole Kidman & Hugh Jackman, "Australia"

It just seems like they're going to have good chemistry together. I don't know why.

Viggo Mortensen, "The Road"

Is this even getting a 2008 release? If it is, look out. The movie might not work as well as Cormac McCarthy's astounding novel did, but this is going to be a performance to be recokned with, whenever it shall be released.

Emily Blunt, "The Young Victoria"

Because she really should have been nominated for "The Devil Wears Prada." Perhaps it'll take a British period piece for Oscar to realize it.

Sean Penn, "Milk"

...although I should've listed the entire cast. This must be something special for so many tough guy actors to be a part of (well, Victor Garber aside, anyway ;) )

Other Notable Performances/Casting Decisions...

Heath Ledger, "The Dark Knight"---He was on my list originally, but isn't it too soon after his death to be hyping his performance? It all feels so morbid.

Drew Barrymore & Jessica Lange, "Grey Gardens"---Trainwreck or masterpiece? You decide.

Charlize Theron, "The Road"---Again, '08 or '09? Please be the former.

Kate Winslet, "The Reader"
---Another shot at Oscar for Kate? Go get 'em.

What about you? What are your most anticipated performances of 2008?

Heath Ledger= Best Supporting Actor nomination.

I'm more interested in seeing Keira in The Edge of Love than in The Duchess.

The picture in this article is adorable.

Burn After Reading said...

John Malkovich - Burn After Reading
Brad Pitt - Burn After Reading and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Jamie Foxx - Soloist
Daniel Craig - Quantum of Solace
Sam Rockwell - Choke
Josh Brolin - Milk

But the one I'm most excited about is

Viggo Mortenson - The Road

One of the most astounding books I've ever read, and one of the most sublime casting decisions. He and Daniel Day-Lewis (because Daniel Day-Lewis can play anyone or anything) were my first choices. Maybe it's because I started reading it straight after I saw Eastern Promises, but seriously brilliant choice.

The Oscar Nazi said...

Leonardo DiCaprio - "Body of Lies"
Benicio Del Toro - "The Argentine" and "Geurilla"
Julianne Moore - "Blindness" and "Saving Grace"
Michael Sheen - "Frost/Nixon"
All the ladies in "Synecdoche, New York"

As to your suggestion that it's too early after Ledger's death to be hyping his performance, I'll just mention that his performance was getting major hype months before his death anyway.

Check out The Oscar Nazi for year-round predictions and analysis.

You don't think Jack Bristow was a tough guy? Sheesh.

Okay...I'm a little late, but I'll try not to post what's already posted...

Saoirse Ronan-The Lovely Bones
Sally Hawkins-Happy-Go-Lucky (This could be the 'IT' performance of the year)
Edge of Love (The cast)-S. Miller, Knightley, Cillian Murphy and 'Brothers and Sisters' Matthew Rhys (It could be Oscar gold for him, he's playing Dylan Thomas)...
James Franco- Milk
Tilda Swinton-Julia (She's playing a woman who steals kids for money!)
Nicole Kidman/Hugh Jackman-Australia (Come on Baz---And could it really be that bad? It's written by Baz and the guy who wrote The Pianist and The Diving Bell and the Buttergfly!)
Amy Ryan-The Changeling (I heard she's playing a prostitute...)
Penelope Cruz-Vicky Christina Barcelona (Cause I loved her in Volver, and I hope she doesn't suck here...)
Drew Barrymore-This could be something Barrymore needs, could finally mean awards consideration?
Amy Adams-Doubt (Becuase I love her...)

And probably my most anticipated movie (Cause of the performances) of the year...

Harry Potter. I know how it ends and what the books is about, but the cast is always the best cast of the year.

Oooh, good point about Bristow. I'll keep my mouth shut, though, because then I'll just go into a rant about how Garber should've won an Emmy for season 1 of Alias.

17 Year Old Blogger said...

And how Garner also should have an Emmy...

Andy Scott said...

Oh God. Please don't open that can of worms. :(

17 Year Old Blogger said...

Garner should have an Emmy and Oscar nomination, but yeah, i'll stop there.

Hey Andy-Since I know how much you loved Knocked Up, I just read this about Apatow's next feature:
----------------
Judd Apatow has tapped Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen and Leslie Mann to star in the next comedy he'll direct.

Untitled pic will be a co-production of Universal Pictures and Sony Pictures Entertainment, with production to start in late summer or early fall.

Apatow, the sole writer on the project, is keeping the plot under wraps. While the studios will split the costs, U will distribute worldwide. Dealmaking is under way with his cast, and producing credits are still being worked out.

Andy Scott said...

Oh sweet. I don't like Adam Sandler much, but it's Apatow, so...

Oh, yeah I forgot Sally Hawkins!!!... She won at Berlinale and a film by Mike Leigh... It's possible, but I'm expecting Joan Chen too.

Well maybe Viggo Mortensen will comeback this year with two intersting proyects:
*Good: around a succesful professor who takes a risky decision in the nazi Germany
*And teh expected The Road... If the film will be released in 2008 maybe the Oscar to Langella or DiCaprio is far than expected

What about Rachel Weisz in the Lovely Bones??
With Peter Jackson in the directing chair, screenplay by himself and based on an aclaimed book....
Rachel was excelent in the Costant Gardener and she´s a great actress...maybe not a win, but I think that a nomination is not out of the question.
Maybe you haven´t said anything because Imdb.com says that the release date is March 2009. Is that corrects??Seems like an awfully long time to deliver a movie.
Byee

Burn After Reading said...

Well, one of the reasons that Lovely Bones hasn't been getting a lot of press is that it comes out a year from Thursday. You know, 2009.

I think the "Sex and the City" movie will be spectacular, and I can't wait to see it in May. That's high on my anticipation list, along with Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, Viggo Mortensen, and Frank Langella, among others.
