A lot of people think - or at least once thought -that Johnny Depp will win an Oscar one day. I've always been on the fence, but I guess actors don't really have biological clocks like actresses do.
What do you think about "Public Enemies"? Will it hit Oscar's radar in 2009?

Fuck yeah this movie is going to be awesome. Christian Bale and Johnny Depp in a Michael Mann film? I can't wait.
I JUST posted this on Awards Daily:
Announcer: Ladies and Gentlemen please welcome last year's Best Actress Winner for Revolutionary Road, Kate Winslet.
Kate: Here are the nominees.
YADA YADA YADA
Kate: And the Oscar goes to....Johnny Depp in Public Enemies.
Haha, very nice. I hope that beautiful little dream comes true, 17.
So I just finished The Road, which I liked, but wouldn't call anything spectacular, and I just finished Atonement, which, I have to say, I was rather underwhelmed with. I thought I would like it a lot, but it felt very short and condensed, like I didn't get to know any of the characters, especially Keira Knightley's character, who was too much in the background for most of the film. It just reminds me of Babel from last year: a film I really thought that I would like but missed in theaters, so I rented it and was underwhelmed by the lack of development and intimacy between the audience and the characters. Despite the film centering on Briony, I felt a strange disconnect for two reasons:
1) Being played by three different actresses is tough, and here I felt it was irreconcilable. While all the actresses were good, especially Saorise Ronan and Romola Garai, I didn't feel a sense of unison. While they were meant to be different (Briony at different stages of her life), it still caused that disconnect which made Briony feel like a composite of three two-dimensional characters, rather than one fully-realized character.
2) Her entire character was defined by her guilt in the second half. I would have liked to see more scenes like the one between her and the French soldier.
That's not to say it was bad, I just feel like maybe a lot was lost in the adaptation. I wouldn't have had a problem with this being a three-hour film, and it should have been. It almost feels like a waste with so much talent on display, especially from McAvoy, Ronan and Joe Wright (although I found the famous Dunkirk tracking shot a bit out of place and "look at me, I made a really long tracking shot", and it didn't really seem to serve the narrative or the tone in any way. It was just a bit...show-offy.)
Anyway, I was fairly disappointed. I may give it another chance in a year or two, or may eventually read the book.
I'm reading Middlesex and I CANNOT put it down. I love it. Atonement the book is very, very well done and written. Also I LOVED Ronan's performance. I don't know why but I just fell in love with her after watching her. And I wouldn't have minded watching a three hour Atonement movie. IMHO, I think that this could be one of those movies that in 30 years or so they remake and this time include what they missed out on, and it could become sooo much greater. I loved the movie though so I won't blab on about it.

Also this might help with the sense of guilt for Briony. I bought the shooting script and after I read it, I think that she saw Robbie rape her cousin, but then when she became older and saw her cousin getting married, that's when I think she finally put two and two together. Was I the only one who thought like this as well? Or did you think that Briony knew all a long it wasn't Robbie?
i think depp is overrated and did not deserve his s/todd nom this year poor james mcavoy.
I think that she was jarred by seeing her cousin and Mustached Chocolatepants, who, by the way, was the most irritating character because he was basically just a giant walking dick that moved the plot forward by raping that girl. His soul characteristic was "rapist". When we first saw him, one of my friends shouted "Christ, look at that rapist".
But I think you're right, I think that she made the connection when she saw them together, although how no one in the entire house put that together is beyond me, too. This nice, clean-cut, college-educated boy that they've known all their lives and who's just retrieved the little redheaded kids, or the skulking rapist/chocolate fetishist who's been missing for the last three hours and has bloodstains all over his tuxedo.
I did love the early scenes at the manor, I liked seeing all these events filtered through Briony's young, impressionable mind, but the rest of the film seemed very hasty.
My general rule of thumb has been that people's reaction to "Atonement" is usually based on whether or not they read the novel. Those who have usually like the movie. those who haven't usually don't. I suspect that this is due to the fact that those who have read the novel think that is is "unfilmable" and are thus pleasantly surprised on how it got pulled off.
This is not a hard and fast rule, mind you, as there are exceptions to both but it seems to pretty prevalent.
marion cotillard and giovanni ribisi are also in public enemies. it will be fantastic.
Giovanni Ribisi? Really? THE Giovanni Ribisi? I've yet to see him do something that I liked, but maybe I watched him in the wrong things. Like Perfect Stranger.
he's playing alvin karpis. read the book, burn. and as for perfect stranger - maybe you shouldn't see obviously bad movies. try saving private ryan, boiler room, lost in translation . . . wait. what am i saying? maybe i'm just thinking a good role and a great director could turn out well.

This is the ONLY blog I have ever been to that the person who writes the blogs never replies or anything.
Well, I wasn't terribly impressed with him in Saving Private Ryan, but the last time I was impressed with acting in a Spielberg film was...long ago. I don't remember him in Lost in Translation, but it's been a while since I've seen that.
I may read the book. I need something to read so that I don't have to pay attention in math.
And Andy posts from time to time, it's just that he's reached some unattainable level of humanity, comparable only to that of a God, and we are merely his creations, toiling endlessly and waiting for his prophecies (that means posts) so that we may debate over their meanings for 20 or so comments before he sends down the next stone tablets for our discussion. He need not join the discussion, for all mystery would be destroyed. How would you like it if Yahweh came down and was like "If you read the Ten Commandments backwards, it's the lyrics to Hotel California. Go Bears." Spoils all the mystery, doesn't it?
Besides, whenever Andy posts in the comments section, we have to kneel and avert our eyes, and I have to cut 17's throat and spill his blood on the altar...really, it's just a hassle.
If I don't get to cut your throat first Burn.
Yeah, it's generally a race to our tribe's one flint knife, but it's a friendly one, and whenever I beat 17 (you know, all the time), he always laughs and wags his finger in a friendly manner before I grab him by the scalp and drag him to the altar. I then say the traditional chant ("O, sapiens Andy may sol solis orior oriri ortus iterum in oriens!") and slit 17's throat. But, you know, it's all in good fun.
Yeah. But I should tell you now, I let you win.
Your death isn't any less glorious for me just because you have suicidal tendencies.
Ha! I literally fell off my chair reading that. Your a genius Burn.
Hey, I reply! See?
And Mondays and Tuesdays are my busiest days! :excuses:
My futures predictions for 2009 Oscars:
-Best Picture
-Best Director (Michael Mann)
-Best Actor in a Leading Role (Johnny Depp)
-Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Christian Bale) It's time
-Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Marion Cotillard) The born for an international star
-Best Original Screenplay (Ronan Bennett)
-Best Cinematography (Dante Spinotti)
-Best Editing (Paul Rubell)
-Best Costume (Colleen Atwood)
Bold! I'd like to see this one do well, if only for Michael Mann. I loved The Insider; probably my #1 of '99, although I need to revisit it.
I don't think Marion Cotillard will be nominated. It will be the Best Actress curse from the last couple of years.
I imagine it will be. Mostly because women are useless. Except for Meryl Streep.
But when was the last time women did anything? When have we had a political triumph for the forces of good since women got the right to vote?
