Oscar Rundown

We'll go into a more detailed analysis as we approach February, but for now here's a quick rundown of this morning's nominations:

Best Picture
:: Atonement
:: Juno
:: Michael Clayton
:: No Country for Old Men
:: There Will Be Blood

Thumbs up for...: Atonement. No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood were expected nominees. However, after getting bitch slapped by the Guilds all season long, Atonement was poised to become this year's "Dreamgirls." Now it can call itself one of the year's 5 best.

Thumbs down for...: Juno and Michael Clayton, which were both "good but not Oscar-worthy" films in my book.

Best Director
:: Julian Schnabel, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
:: Jason Reitman, Juno
:: Tony Gilroy, Michael Clayton
:: Ethan and Joel Coen, No Country for Old Men
:: Paul Thomas Anderson, There Will Be Blood

Thumbs up for...: Paul Thomas Anderson, who finally got his due.

Thumbs down for...: Tony Gilroy. "Michael Clayton" was an auspicious debut but it paled in comparison to more deserving contenders like Joe Wright and "Bourne"-alum Paul Greengrass.

Best Actor
:: George Clooney, Michael Clayton
:: Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood
:: Johnny Depp, Sweeney Todd
:: Tommy Lee Jones, In the Valley of Elah
:: Viggo Mortensen, Eastern Promises

Thumbs up for...: Viggo Mortensen. We knew it would finally happen, but it's still nice to see nonetheless.

Thumbs down for...: Tommy Lee Jones. Jones gave a fine performance in "In the Valley of Elah," but his supporting turn in "No Country for Old Men" was far more deserving.

Best Actress
:: Cate Blanchett, The Golden Age
:: Julie Christie, Away From Her
:: Marion Cotillard, La Vie En Rose
:: Laura Linney, The Savages
:: Ellen Page, Juno

Thumbs up for...: Laura Linney. She just missed my Best Actress ballot, but kudos to voters for remembering her wonderfully subtle turn in "The Savages."

Thumbs down for...: Cate Blanchett. One nomination is fine, but this is pushing it.

Best Supporting Actor
:: Casey Affleck, The Assassination of Jesse James
:: Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men
:: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Charlie Wilson's War
:: Hal Holbrook, Into the Wild
:: Tom Wilkinson, Michael Clayton

Thumbs up for...: Casey Affleck, who held on strong for the entire season.

Thumbs down for...: Philip Seymour Hoffman. Like most of "Charlie Wilson's War," Hoffman's servicable performance barely registered.

Best Supporting Actress
:: Cate Blanchett, I'm Not There
:: Ruby Dee, American Gangster
:: Saoirse Ronan, Atonement
:: Amy Ryan, Gone Baby Gone
:: Tilda Swinton, Michael Clayton

Thumbs up for...: Saoirse Ronan, arguably the best of the 3 Brionys.

Thumbs down for...: Ruby Dee, who was probably nominated more for her career than her underwhelming performance in "American Gangster."

Best Original Screenplay
:: Juno
:: Lars and the Real Girl
:: Michael Clayton
:: Ratatouille
:: The Savages

Thumbs up for...: Ratatouille & The Savages, two extremely well-written films.

Thumbs down for...: Michael Clayton, which had about one too many structural problems (meandering subplots, for starters).

Best Adapted Screenplay
:: Atonement
:: Away From Her
:: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
:: No Country for Old Men
:: There Will Be Blood

Thumbs up for...: Away From Her, a nice surprise nominee.

Thumbs down for...: none. This is a relatively strong category.

I have to say I'm pretty pleased with this morning's nominations. Yes, there were misses in every category, but overall I would say these are A LOT better than last year's.

What about you guys? How would you rate the 2007 Oscar nominations?

Last year my main frustration was DiCaprio getting nominated for the wrong movie. This year, it's Jones getting nominated for the wrong movie. Erg.

Also, I've never met anyone who thought Surf's Up was better than The Simpsons Movie.

these were better than last years, my biggest problem yet again comes down to lack of sweeney love, but im pretty much over it at this point. My other big problem is Paul Dano getting overshadowed by Daniel Day-Lewis. Dano gave a great performance as well (obviously not in the league of lewis, but who is) and without him the film would have lost much of its tension. But oh well... also Jason Reitman for Juno? You've got to be fucking kidding me. There were many admirable qualities about Juno... the directing wasnt one of them.

Disappointments:

Too much Juno love, too much Michael Clayton love, especially in the director's section.

Tommy Lee Jones getting nominated for the wrong film.

Cate Blanchett's double nominations.

Sweeney Todd getting the shaft.

Ruby Dee over Kelly MacDonald or Jeniffer Garner.

Jason Reitman over Tim Burton. Come on, already.

No Sunshine for visual effects.

Kinda disappointed overall. I was hoping for some nice surprises, but I got ones more akin to someone shitting on your bed in the middle of the night.

I am very pleasantly suprised by the Atonement nom for BP. Ahhhhh I am still so happy, it really deserved it! I would have liked Sweeney Toddy and Into the Wild better than Juno and Michael Clayton (the two most overrated movies of the year though).

I disagree about Juno. It places number four on my best of 2007 list and has every right to be there. Jason Reitman was a nice surprise, I've become a fan since Thank You For Smoking and now this. But I would have been far more excited for Tim Burton, so that diminishes it. I agree that Michael Clayton was really overrated, but all 3 nominated actors are more than deserving.

I can't decide if Juno or Into the Wild is more overrated.

My main frustrations this year are the Joe Wright snub for director and the Sweeney Todd snub in every catagory basically. I'm very excited about Atonement for the Best Picture nom which is my number 1, but I wish Zodiac could've been nominated some places

Juno was a great movie, and I can completely see why it was nominated. Also, if Blood and No Country manage to split the vote- it could be a surprise winner. I think the fact that Jason Reitman got nominated shows that the Academy may love this movie more than we realize. They really liked Little Miss Sunshine, but even that didn't get a director nomination.

despite the fact that it was known it would happen, casey affleck being nominated supporting is such a joke. an incredibly deserved nomination if in lead, as supporting it is merely one of the worst cases of category fraud ever. i would switch casey and tommy lee jones lead/supporting (give tommy the nod for no country).

also, what a joke that phillip seymour hoffman got nominated for a performance that was nothing but a few wisecracks. i would drop him and replace him with paul dano.

the simpsons movie being left out for animated movie is one of the biggest jokes. also, the disqualification of jonny greenwood's there will be blood score right at the last second, when babel's winning score last year had a greater reliance on pre-existing music. that and nick cave & warren ellis for assassination of jesse james were easily the greatest scores of the year.

There's ALWAYS at least one surprise nod in the acting categories. I tried to predict it this year, but didn't do so well. Turns out, it was Tommy Lee Jones - someone that I suspected would grab a Supporing nod for No Country.
