According to David Poland's blog, the Weinsteins are gearing up for a Lead Actress campaign for Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett in "I'm Not There."

Now I obviously don't have the means to confirm or deny it, but if it's true then we're definitely looking at a dramatic shake up in Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Methinks Cate will be nominated either way, but where this leaves the rest of the contenders remains to be seen.
More updates as the news develops.

With Blanchett in, who is out? This is very possible. Don't forget the same thing happened with Nicole Kidman in 2003 and she won. And we have other cases that supports who goes lead and sometimes win:Kidman in The Hours, MacDormand in Fargo,Witherspoon in Walk the Line. It is very possible. But if she is in, who is out? And who will "replace" her in the supporting race?
MacDonald has a good chance of replacing her in Supporting, but as far as who she will bump...who knows. It seems like all the contenders in Best Actress are expendable, with the possible exception of Ellen Page and Amy Adams. They're safe bets, but a safe bet is relative. I'm not sure what to hold on to here.
I'm still holding on to my Saoirse Ronan win, but I have seen FYC ads for 'I'm Not There' and Blanchett has been listed as supporting in all of them....
Oh and Kidman's nomination/win was different becuase all the other performers and scenes revolved around Kidman's character.
I think Blanchett's change to Best Actress means good things for Jennifer Jason Leigh (the only other actress with the potential to win BSA). It also means that it'll be Blanchett, Adams, Linney, christie & Cottilard in BA>
So who the $(@* gets nominated in Supporting then? I want to cry.
I really can't see this happening...
I have a feeling that somebody close to the Weinsteins was payed or told or something to tell Poland that Blanchett will go lead to see how the reception is...
If this goes through, then this is good news for every best supporting actress candidates. Oh, and I've seen a few clips of Winslet in Romance & Cigarettes and no matter how much the movie is crappy, Winslet is nomination worthy. So this helps my predicted winner Ronan, Amy Ryan, Vanessa Redgrave, Romola Garai, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Winslet, Kidman, McDonald, Swinton, Roberts, Garner, Mann, Tomei...
I have high hopes for MacDonald. I thought she was brilliant in that last scene.
And I think the Weinsteins are too smart to let this happen.
I agree with 16 that this might just be a trial balloon to gauge reaction. If it happens expect the BA noms to be:
Blanchett
Christie
Cotillard
Knightley
Linney
Kidman, Bonahm Carter, and Page can forget it if Blanchett goes lead.
Supporting is where this will have the biggest effect and it would probably mean:
Jennifer jason Leigh
Kelly MacDonald
Saoirse Ronan
Tilda Swnton
with Redgrave probably the most likely for the fifth slot unless moving Blanchett to lead makes Warner Brothers decide to push Helena Bonham Carter in Supporting instead of lead for "Sweeney Todd."
Worst case scenario is that Blanchett in lead means she splits her nominating votes and misses a nod altogehter. But Harvey Weinstien said he'd shoot himself if she didn't get one, so...
The more I think about this the more I think that its gotta be some sort of trial balloon (if not a flat out false rumor). If this turns out to be true it could be very, very risky as it might strike a lot of Academy members as more Weinstein arrogance and overreach.
Still, if it can be pulled off for anyone it would be Blanchett.
The Weinsteins arnt stupid. They knew what they were doing with Nicole Kidman in The Hours, but I'm Not There isn't going to get nominated for Best Picture and win actress. This is just a test like I sad before and you guys don't remember that Warner Brothers did the EXACT same thing with Nicholson last year? Blanchett isn't going to go lead cause the Weinsteins are smart enought to know that she isn't a lock for Lead but she is the frontrunner for Supporting...I stillthink that Saoirse is going to take it...
So Indie Spirit Award nominations tomorrow...Look for them to be filled with Juno, Waitress, I'm Not There, Away From Her & Margot at the Wedding...Kidman is getting raves for The Golden Compass from The Guardian, and she might be able to get an Indie Spirit nomination tomorrow...
Also, it seems that after this weekend, Amy Adams is on almost every major predictions chart.
i think Before The Devil Knows is going to get some critics love, so look for Marissa Tomei in BSA...
Well, Blanchett was nominated in supporting this morning for the Independent Spirit Awards.
And bad news for Linney. She's not up for The Savages, but Hoffman is.
